Spearfishing is the most ecologically sound method of fishing that we have. You never take a fish that you don't intend to eat or one that is too small, large or of the wrong species. You don't "gut hook" a baby fish knowing that it will not survive.
Whether you are Freediving or SCUBA diving you need to master all your diving skills if you want to fool the fish.
By learning to control your buoyancy and any unwanted movement underwater you will see more fish and your success in catching them will increase.
You will learn to not only see the fish around you but observe their movements and the habitats they live in and again your success will increase.
While catching fish is challenging it isn't the only thing you can harvest. On Long Island, we have lots of shellfish and they make a nice meal. You can take mussels, clams, oysters, and even lobsters although lobsters are harder to find.
All these challenges help to increase your enjoyment of the sport as your skill level increases.
You don't need a lot to get started spearfishing. You need mask, fins, snorkel and a spear. You should also have a wetsuit, weight belt and a dive knife. You will need some guidance in the proper type of gear that is best suited to the type fish you wish to catch.
