Snorkeling is a great way to get to see what's below the surface without having to take a certification course. Some people have conditions that prevent them from going under the water but they can enjoy the fish and corals from the surface. Snorkeling is also a great way to get introduced to the underwater world. Snorkeling provides a range of physical and mental benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, increased strength and flexibility, stress relief, and an opportunity to connect with nature.
We live on an island so there are lots of places to go. One of the prime spots is the Ponquogue Bridge and the Shinnecock Inlet. But your local beach can be wonderful. Look for piles of rocks and take your time, if you rush you will miss a lot. Another spot to look to see great things is by old docks and piers. Some of the best stuff you will see is in six feet of water or less. The best time to go snorkeling depends on the destination and the specific site. In general, the best weather and water conditions are usually found during the local dry season. However, some sites may be better during different times of the year depending on factors such as marine life migrations or water temperatures.
You do not have to have a lot of expensive equipment to enjoy snorkeling. The minimum gear that you need is a mask, fins, and snorkel. It is important for your enjoyment and safety that these be properly fitted to you. If your mask is leaking or your fins are cutting your feet you can't focus on what you are doing and this is a problem. That is why buying a "packaged set" doesn't work out for most people.
